Voor zover ik weet is playmobiel de eerste tentoonstelling die enkel en alleen de mobiele telefoon als uitgangspunt neemt (en niet alle wireless apparaten die er zijn), maar er zijn natuurlijk meerdere initiatieven op dit terrein. Ik noemde al de Nederlandse PARK.nl/pocketmovies, 10sec.org, MobileVideoNet en er is ook The Ringtone Society . De meeste initiatieven richten zich op de videofunctie van de telefoon. Ook de NPS ontwikkelt een platform Xtra Small voor zogenaamde 'micro movies' of 'mobi's': films met en voor de mobiele telefoon. Internationaal is er bijvoorbeeld Mobile Film festival, Pocket Shorts en Mobile Content Festival . Er zijn natuurlijk nieuwe media festivals waarbij telefonie een onderdeel vormt zoals: Sonar , Futuresonic , Ars Electronica , ISEA2006, Transmediale en PLAN . Een nieuw festival is The Fourth Screen, ‘a global fest of art & innovation for mobile phones’. Toevallig was de werktitel van playmobiel lange tijd The Third Screen. Het verwijst naar het telefoonscherm, dat zo wordt genoemd in navolging van het televisie- en computerscherm. The Fourth Screen ziet het filmdoek als eerste scherm. Het festival roept op tot bijdragen in de categoriën Moving images en Wise technologies. Omdat playmobiel in alle (sub-)categoriën wel iets te bieden heeft, hebben we de hele tentoonstelling maar ingediend!
